Fetish Totem LS528Hz

Punish the Streets at New Art Projects

Fetish Totem LS528Hz for VFD Vogue Goes Rogue … the back story.

As part of a fashion programme to support the Barbican’s Jean Paul Gaultier exhibition, Lyall Hakaraia (aka Vogue Fabrics Dalston) launched a programme of Ritualistic Corporate Journeys (RCJ). “With RCJ we are drawing parallels between two seemingly incongruous cultures: both of which use highly complex and esoteric, beliefs and traditions to manifest results. The first is the Corporate World and its use of economics to achieve positive outcomes and the other is Folklore and its use of occult practices to forecast a favourable future.”

When Lyall asked me to design one of the totems I immediately thought about satellites, social networking, corporate technology and how it makes us feel connected. We call this technology progress, when in fact we have a far superior natural ability to be connected. Ancient texts like the Dao de Ching, Buddhism, Yoga, transcendental meditation refer to oneness. Scientific theories about the Unified Field: http://www.yogicflyingclubs.org/foundation.html and Holographic Universe: http://youtu.be/NsbZT9bJ1s4

Our separateness is an illusion.

We are ALL connected, like a huge coral reef – one organism with ever evolving growth.  All the individual components look like different parts but are actually all one. So we can transmit and receive energy and communicate across time and space – no tech needed. Perhaps the pineal gland (third eye) is our inbuilt wifi.

And so my totem was inspired by satellites, acting as a sender and receiver of loving energy 528Hz.

We took the totems to Glastonbury where in between dancing we made a slo-mo video and I got to twirl my totem in a beautiful green field and soak up the fresh vibes. The next stage of the journey was a ritualistic walk from the Barbican to Hackney via London Fields for a fashion makeover – I was given a Noel Stewart hat. Later we celebrated with a summer garden party of music and creative delights.

The totem has been resting ever since, now 5 years on I’ve had the chance to reconnect and it’s been a delight. Now showing at the VFD 10 year anniversary Punish The Streets exhibition at New Art Projects, I gave my LS528Hz a little revamp after a little walk through East London to freshen up her vibes. I later adorned her with hand-made tin wings to mark the 10 year anniversary, and prepare her to fly solo. She’ll be floating in the gallery for the next month next to former fashion collaborator Dr Noki’s custom avatars.

“The extraordinary performance costumes, ‘Fetish Totem’ by Laura Shepherd and ‘Fetish Totem 2’ by Lyall Hakaraia are suspended, like beguiling and slightly unsettling creatures from the ceiling of the first gallery space.”

My first ever music video

I met Singapore based Analog Girl at a Showstudio event in east London years ago.
We stayed in touch, she used to buy my Glovedup Gloves for her performances.
Then earlier this year, Mei (the woman who is Analog Girl), asked if she could use some of my digital films to create a music video for her new single.
“More than You Know” was just released.

Timeout Singapore called the video “trippy”: https://www.timeout.com/singapore/blog/watch-now-the-analog-girl-releases-music-video-for-more-than-you-know-061617

And Buro 24/7 Interviewed me about the collaboration and my creative life in general: http://www.buro247.sg/culture/insiders/the-analog-girl-more-than-you-know-music-ls528.html

My first ever voiceover

Of course I agreed to record a series of voiceovers for Ibiza record label and radio station when I was there earlier this month. What fun. And now they’re rolling and you can/should listen to the first radio show of the summer because it’s brilliant – and you can hear me.

Peter Lindbergh interview on Showstudio

Showstudio sets a beautiful scene for Lou Stoppard to asks brilliant questions which are answered in an open, inspiring and totally cool way by fashion photographer Peter Lindbergh.

I’m pretty sure the first time my Glovedup Gloves appeared in Vogue Italia was in a Peter Lindbergh story. Stylist Patti Wilson commissioned me to create special pieces for the story. We called them Robot gloves – they were metallic, crystal and metal studded – one pair had a knuckle visor. There were more stories later, but this was the first – thank you Peter and Patti.

Anthropomorphizing

Standing up close to these Gavin Turk exhibits at my favourite London Newport Street Gallery, I felt I was connecting to something alive. I wonder that when an artist creates an object, there is some kind of energy transference that remains in the object long after the work is completed, and this is what I feel when I get close.

Artist Profile

Tobias Gremmler

Virtual Actors in Chinese Opera is quite definitely the most inspiringly beautiful motion graphics I’ve discovered so far. More art than fashion and just one of the many exceptional works of teacher, guru and master digital craftsman Tobias Gremmler

Inspiration

Elord Virtual Runway

Whilst I’m no fan of golf, this virtual runway show is a brilliant example of the potential to virtually visualise fashion and expand on reality.

Artist Profile

Arice

Arice’s film Lure was created in collaboration with Iceberg for the Vogue Italia and Fashion Film Festival Milano. Whilst I struggle a little bit with the proportions of his star avatar; the particle effects and VFX in this film are high definition sophistication.

Inspiration

Thomas Traum

“New Images for a New World” – I’ll say.

It was the gamer style movie for Christopher Rayburn’s SS15 collection that first caught my attention. More recently – the crazy print clash animations for Kenzo blew my mind!

Thomas Traum is shaping digital fashion.

Labels

Fyodor Golan and Miximaliste

This is it – virtual fashion vision brilliance. London based designer duo Fyodor Golan are tech fashion-forward and this is the perfect collaboration with Miximaliste to present their virtual Resort 17 collection.
